The Resource Center:

The Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Health Resource Center
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adolescents and those who are questioning their sexual identity face additional challenges in meeting their needs for health and mental health care. These vulnerable youth are generally invisible within the healthcare system despite the fact that many are at-risk for a range of unique health and mental health concerns.

Stigma has social, behavioral and health-related consequences that can increase risk for HIV, sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse, depression, and suicide. In addition, lack of information and training among health and mental health providers remains a significant barrier to care for these underserved youth.

To address this need, staff at the Adolescent AIDS Program (AAP) at Montefiore Medical Center have developed the first comprehensive Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Health Resource Center (GLAHRC). GLAHRC provides state-of-the-art technical assistance, resource information and training on issues related to the medical, counseling and support needs of LGBT youth and their families. We provide these services to youth, families, healthcare providers and youth advocates.

GLAHRC Goals
• Training providers on assessment, treatment and care of LGBT youth through on-line resources, presentations, conferences, and information distribution.

• Empowering youth to help address their health care needs by participating in GLAHRC projects as advisers, speakers and resource developers.

• Maintaining an on-line database of medical and psychosocial caregivers supportive of LGBT youth and their families throughout New York state.
